JHFCU has ATMs around Hopkins campuses, many with deposit capability. Due to special agreements with the Credit Union, JHFCU members can use their ATM or Visa Check cards for withdrawals at over 1,500 M&T ATMs* and more than 28,000 CO-OP Network ATMs nationwide, without surcharges from the ATM owner!
In
addition to surcharge-free withdrawals, you can also take
advantage of making deposits at non-JHFCU ATMs nationwide. JHFCU’s
expanded ATM network is a huge benefit to JHFCU members who travel, whose
workplace doesn’t coincide with our branch locations, or who simply
enjoy the convenience of nationwide access. Wherever you are across the
country, chances are good there’s a CO-OP ATM near you!

*ATM Cards - No fee from JHFCU, surcharge from M&T. Visa Check cards - free unlimited
JHFCU's ATM and Visa Check cards are an easy way to get quick access to your money and can be used at over 28,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide! Both come with no monthly fee and surcharge-free locations. Please see our fee sheet for more details. See below for more information about the benefits and features of each card:
The Credit Union's ATM service is affiliated with the STAR, Cirrus, and Encore networks. A JHFCU ATM card can be used at any of these network locations. You can also use your JHFCU card for an unlimited number of free "point of sale" ATM/debit transactions (e.g., at gas stations and grocery store checkouts) from your Share Draft Checking account, and can often get cash back using your PIN. Cards are issued in our branches. You can choose your PIN when applying for the card or change it in the branch after receipt of your card. If your ATM card is ever lost or stolen please call 1-800-JHFCU-70.
An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:
What are the standard overdraft practices that come with my account?
We do authorize and pay overdrafts for checks and other transactions made using your checking account number and automatic bill payments. We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM transactions or everyday debit card transactions unless you ask us to.We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.
What if I want my financial institution to authorize and pay overdrafts on my ATM and everyday debit card transactions?
If you also want us to authorize and pay overdrafts on ATM and everyday debit card transactions, call JHFCU, complete and present a consent form at any JHFCU branch location or submit the Opt In form.
What fees will I be charged if Johns Hopkins FCU pays my overdraft?
With the Visa Check Card you can earn 5¢ rebates and it gives you access to your Share Draft Checking account around the world. Use it anywhere you see the Visa logo - at merchants or for telephone or Internet catalog orders. The amount of the transaction is deducted from your available balance when the purchase occurs, and the transaction details appear in your checking account that day or within a few days after the transaction takes place, so make sure you record the transaction in your checkbook register. If you select the credit option, make purchases up to the lesser of the available balance in your Share Draft Checking account and Line of credit/Overdraft account (if applicable), or $1,500 per day (with a maximum of $3,500 over a 4-day period). JHFCU participates in the Verified by Visa program, where you have an option to designate a password for online purchases for added security. Please visit our contact us page to activate/cancel your card, or report it stolen.
The Visa Check card is also an ATM card. Get cash anywhere you see the STAR, Encore, or Cirrus ATM signs. JHFCU cardholders also get surcharge-free withdrawals at all JHFCU and M&T Bank* ATMs in the Maryland region! Surcharge-free access is also available nationally through the CO-OP Network. Use the card to make PIN point of sale transactions, at the grocery store, for instance, and you can get cash back. Make deposits at various JHFCU ATMs, too. To get a Visa Check card, you need a Share Draft Checking account. Cards are issued at our branches and you can choose your own PIN or change it in the future (at any branch) unless you choose your own when applying for your card. Keep your card in a secure place; report its loss or theft right away. Before using your card, call the toll-free number on the back to activate it.
*Visa Check card holders only
Each time you do one of the following with your Visa Check card, you will earn a 5¢ credit to your Share Draft Checking account:**
*Purchases are debited within 1-2 days. However, the amount of the transaction is immediately put under a hold in your account, so be sure to record the transaction in your check register.
**NOTE: Use of the card for cash
withdrawals, or as a "debit" transaction
in which you enter your PIN at a point
of sale (e.g., a grocery store or gas
station) will not qualify for the rebate.
Credit for qualifying transactions will be
posted at the end of each month.

Direct Deposit - is the automatic, electronic transfer of your paycheck's entire net pay into your credit union account. It is different from a payroll deduction (see below) and comes with several benefits and discounts at JHFCU.
Payroll Deduction - Unlike direct deposit, which involves your whole paycheck, payroll deduction involves just part of your pay. The money is automatically deducted from your paycheck and deposited to your credit union account(s) in amount you specify. You can have as little as $5 deducted every pay period, and you can use Payroll Deduction to pay back credit union loans or build up your accounts over time.
Deposits and payments to the Credit Union may be made by cash, check, money order, or most conveniently, through Payroll Deduction and/or Direct Deposit. You may arrange to have all or a portion of your paycheck automatically distributed to various accounts including loan payments. For example, you can request a portion of your pay to be Payroll Deducted to your Share Savings Account and a Holiday Club Account, and the rest Direct Deposited to a Share Draft Checking Account .
Along with being convenient, Direct Deposit and/or Payroll Deduction eliminate the risk of loss, theft, or forgery of your paycheck. This is especially important if you travel or are on vacation, or are simply too busy to visit our branches.
Please contact us concerning the deposit of government, Social Security, pension and annuity checks, as well as your paycheck.

The ACH (Automated Clearing House) network provides a way to allow transactions to be debited and credited to your account much faster than checks (typically 1-2 business days). JHFCU accepts ACH transactions for checking accounts only.* Savings debits may only be processed in a JHFCU branch, from an ATM, or with a withdrawal request through Online Banking.
Examples of ACH credit transactions include direct deposit of payroll and IRS refunds. ACH direct debit transfers are items such as consumer payments on utility bills, insurance premiums, mortgage loans, and other bills. Using ACH payments can help reduce errors associated with writing and/or mailing checks along with save resources (paper, ink, fuel to transport checks, etc.)
*For all accounts except those described as checking accounts, JHFCU does not permit the transfers of funds to a third party by means of a pre-authorized or automatic transfer. Pre-authorized or automatic transfers can be described as a transaction were authorization, verbal or written, was obtain by the originator to debit or credit the receiver’s account. JHFCU does not allow debits to those account deemed savings account via the ACH network.
Borrowers can get protection against the unexpected with Credit Life
and Disability Insurance* available at JHFCU. Affordable disability insurance
can help pay off your Credit Union covered loan balance if you become
disabled, protecting your credit rating at a time when funds may be limited.
Credit Life insurance helps ensure that your loved ones won't end up paying
your loan balance should you die before the loan is paid off. Credit Life
and Disability premiums are added in with your loan payment, so no separate
payment is required.
*Credit Life and Disability Insurance is underwritten by Life Investors Insurance Company of America (Home Office – Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and is available to credit union members only through the Johns Hopkins FCU (Home Office – Baltimore, MD). Exclusions, limitations and terms of availability apply to this coverage. For cost and complete details, contract your loan officer.
